Concert Review: : Dennis Lloyd Is An International Star At Irving Plaza

It’s always weird, for me, seeing international stars because I am reminded that there is a world beyond America. Although I have travelled the world and am from Puerto Rico, which is apart of the USA, something about living in the states can make you feel like you are living in the world. It’s all happening here or, at least, it was “all” happening” at Dennis Lloyd’s Irving Plaza show; where he was treated like Jesus Christ Superstar. 

From the minute he hit the stage, Lloyd carried himself like a rock star; a man aware that if the people want to make him iconic then he must walk like an icon. That being said, he is not arrogant. He teeters the balance between confidence and ego; understanding that a man that owns his power does not need to lord it as much as wield it. Hence, his blazing self-belief connected with the battles between doubt and clarity that come with tracks like, “Nevermind,” “Thunk About It,” and “Never Go Back.” For Dennis Lloyd, confidence and clarity are one in the same.

When you are clear about who you are, you become clearer on how you are with others and what they want from you. Dennis’s fans crave his attention and humor, which is why he guides them through songs and sing-alongs with a boyish, “wink-nudge” charm. He is that guy in the party that says hello and converses with everyone like he knows them, but, technically, he only knows the hostess. He dances, whips out different instruments, and sings/talks to the audience with a genuine desire to know them as much as they believe they know him. In this Dennis Lloyd following, every member believes his music is their message, and having screens blast with images, particularly of his face, solidified him as a messenger.

Funny, kind, and blessed with a voice that could summon The Lion King, Dennis Lloyd reminded me how much I miss old school rockers. He is a Mick Jagger on stage; jumping and swagging around as if he is a pirate and his voice could steal every piece of gold you have.
