Concert Review: Dodie Is Sweetly Human At Rough Trade
Watching Dodie was mesmerizing for multiple reasons. When you hear the word “internet sensation,” it can carry a note of surreality. Yet, amongst the cracks of internet gimmicks and tropes lies Dodie; a genuinely heartfelt, sweet songstress whose raw vocals and surprisingly intimate lyrics appealed to women of all ages at Rough Trade.
Vocally and lyrically, Dodie strikes for the simplicity of thought, especially when you have a whirlwind of feelings. From “Monster” to “ She,” all of her songs appealed to when you are feeling incredibly big, deep emotions about someone or a situation, but you have no idea how to handle them. Thus, I was unsurprised to see how avidly the audience loved her; human beings want to see humanity, and Dodie is completely human. She is earnest, kind, funny, and, like most of us, is convinced her quirks are “lame.” Again, like most of us, she is a good person that does not always feel good about herself, which made me curious to see so many kids and teens.
I’ve always said that kids are way more aware of their surroundings and themselves than adults give them credit. The difference is, as you get older, the world validates your awareness more, and you get better at conveying it. Still, there is wisdom in youth, and through her emotional honesty, Dodie shells it out with comfort to her fans. They see her like a sister, an emotional equal, and a sonic companion to their own self-discoveries, especially when it comes to opening up to your sexuality. In her case, it was bisexuality, a note the crowd cheered with pride.
All in all, Dodie’s show was gorgeously clear and connective. It’s always moving to see a crowd of people harmonizing hums, without even being asked, to back the artist they admire. Thus, after the quick, fluid set, Dodie felt like the right artist to admire. For More Information On Dodie Click Here.
