Concert Review: Donna Missal Is A Supernova At Rough Trade

Donna Missal is going to be a major star, and everyone knows it. Premiering her debut album, This Time, the energy surrounding her, literally, feels cosmic. It is as if we are all gathering to watch the makings of a supernova, and at her sold out Rough Trade show, the crowd gazed to see how the cosmos can form a voice.

By all means, Donna Missal has the X-factor. She performs her songs with such an emotiveness that she becomes necessary to see live. While her record is a treasure chest of sound, her live show will leave you picking diamonds, gold, and rubies from your ears. In concert, her songs pick up their emotional weights because she is so physical when she sings. The way she moves her hands, swings her hair, and writhes notes into pure soul, will leave you reeling with your own sentiments.

Missal performs as if she is the embodiment of your heart. She can pick and pluck every bad feeling and blissful moment you ever felt in a voice that is comparable to Amy Winehouse or Janis Joplin. She has a classic rasp/ swag that makes love feel like a swift swig of bourbon straight to the spirit. Yet, she is open about her desire to grow in kindness for herself; something she asks the audience to do, as well. From a cover of R.E.M’s “Everybody Hurts” to her blazing hits such as, “Keep Lying” and “Jupiter, the night felt encompassed by her wise advice: “If there is something that makes you think you should not respect yourself then that something is not real!”

With her brother/ the coolest guitarist, Steven, by her side, and her parents photoing her show as if parental pride could literally start a photography school, Donna Missal’s night was remarkably special. It was a first for Donna, which meant she was trying to savor our presence as much as we were trying to savor hers. There was no denying that everybody in that room was building a permanent memory of the night, and, though her set was brief, t felt like the beginning of a very long, prosperous path.
