Concert Review: Durand Jones And The Indications Vibe At MHOW

When people look at the past, they always talk about the “glory days” when life was so much better. Now, historically, I struggle to see their point, but, musically, I completely understand. Durand Jones and The Indications are the glory days of the 1950’s; when dames and gents danced to impress each other.

Excuse me, as I put my “old-timer hat” on and discuss “kids these days!” Music, nowadays, does not always promote courtship. It either discusses love’s heartbreaking tendencies or tries amp its sexual ones. Yet, what about the in-between, and the loveliness of a lover’s company? After all, we give our bodies to someone when we feel they have taken our heart, and Durand Jones has a voice that highlights this core connection. He sings to love BODY AND SOUL!

As Durand Jones roars, belts, riffs, and coddles his vocals, like a soulful fire he must both tame and further with his every note and physical movement: even throwing himself on the floor. The crowd grows mesmerized by how beautiful love is and how much Durand Jones presents it as such. You would think love was a gentle rose blossoming in his vocal box; using his testaments to its power like sun-rays. Tracks like, “True Love”, “Smile”, and “Groovy Babe” made people grab a lover’s hand and either bounce in glee, waltz with them in romance, or say “YAS!” like Jesus had shown up for his own gospel. Thanks to the backing of The Indications as his bantering brothers/ pinnacles of music excellence, there is a big band feel to their style that gives the night a speakeasy/ “night at the Riverdale hop” kind of vibe.

There is a vibrant ease to Durand Jones ‘concert that cannot be replicated because, in many ways, it is stuck in the 1950’s. Not many artists are trying to go “too back in time”, usually staying in the 70’s or 80’s influences, to celebrate how much music has always made us feel timeless. Yet, by going back to an Motown era that celebrated the coy, almost demure playfulness of love, Durand Jones And The Indications offer something new and colorful to the usual music/ love palette that people receive. Their show cherishes that beyond loving or lusting for your partner, you actually like them. For More Information On Durand Jones And The Indications Click Here.
