Concert Review: Elizabeth & The Catapult Is “More Than Enough” At LPR
When you start a show with an acoustic cover of LCD Soundsystem’s “New York, I Love You, But You Are Tearing Me Down”, you have my loyal attention. In a vibrant, red dress, Elizabeth & The Catapult struck her dark piano with an ominous tone to bring out a reality that not too many New Yorkers like to admit; our beloved city can be draining. It was in this gorgeously melancholic tone, that Elizabeth immediately set that her Le Poisson Rouge show was going to be a beautiful and boisterous look into life’s bitterness.
Elizabeth & The Catapult – More Than Enough
Life can be exhausting, especially in NYC, but Elizabeth has a personality that bubbles in friendliness. She, clearly, sees herself as a nerd with some self-deprecating, silly humor that, immediately, puts the crowd’s guard down. Moreover, she never stops smiling or moving around her keyboard like a chef making her favorite dish. She throws a riff there and a synth here, and SPLASH!; we are given songs as delicious as pasta. In tracks like, “Salt Of The Earth”, “Go Away My Lover”, and “Thanks For Nothing”, Elizabeth proved that she is a master lyricist. The visions she summons would challenge any person to confront their imagination and their wisdom; showing that creativity is the first step, next to love, that lets empathy enter. Every song was relatable in its poetry, and potent with emotional details that exude life is an unusual adventure. Hence, what I love about Elizabeth & The Catapult is that her songs are like the rare recalls we have, on our life or day, that, ultimately, make us conclude, “Wow, this world is trippy”. Such an aura and message amps up the talent and genius of Elizabeth. This woman has an old soul trapped in a young person’s body, and carries a vocal range that feels more “at home” with early jazz and pop legends such as Ella Fitzgerald and Nina Simone. She radiates her range with a bluesy spear that is vintage in spike and refreshing for the audience.
Elizabeth & the Catapult – Thank You For Nothing
The crowd adored Elizabeth, which meant a lot to her that night because she was introducing new songs, as well.SPOILER ALERT! This October is going to be fantastic month in Fall because Elizabeth & The Catapult is releasing a new album. Introducing new songs such as, “Magic Chaser” and “Ambrosia” she, basically, confirmed her next album was going to be a rousing, uplifting hit. These songs were positive takes on accepting the goodness in life, while a few of her past tracks were about seeing if there was any goodness at all. The difference marked a growth in both the musician and person that is Elizabeth Ziman. Nothing like time to show you the greatness it offers, even if temporary, and Elizabeth & The Catapult’s concert was a brief, great time. In essence, the night can be encompassed in one moment. As the openers, The Brit Pop Choir, lined up behind Elizabeth to sing “More Than Enough,” the crowd hushed in gleeful agreement, There are moments, people, artists like Elizabeth & The Catapult, and strengths to yourself that go beyond enough; they are fulfilling.
