Concert Review: Elke Is Nancy Vicious At Berlin NYC

I was recently thinking about how New York attracts dreamers from around the world, while simultaneously being known as The Concrete Jungle. There is a reason they say “If you can make it here, you can make it anywhere!” The cracks on our concrete are where many dreams and tears have been buried, and Elke, at Berlin NYC, felt like the most New York artist to represent that.

Actually, Elke represents more than New York’s raw, guttural cries for a sense of fulfillment; she represents American youth. As she smiles through her lyrics, only to turn her jawline into a bite, she balances the nice and not so nice of trying to get your “shiz” together: the failed loves, the stupid moves, the self-doubt, the borderline delusions we call dreams. It is no wonder her EP is called Bad Metaphors; sure we all say things like, “ strike two birds with one stone” and “penny saved, penny earned” but…… WHAT DO THOSE REALLY MEAN TO LIFE!?

At her show, there was NO DOUBT Elke was going to rise the levels of Snail Mail and Phoebe Bridgers in becoming the new Alanis Morrisettes of this generation. Each embraces the depression and oppressions of being young women defining themselves spiritually, financially, and sexually in a world that STILL thinks it has every right to tell women how to live.
From “Without the I” to “Black and Blue” her voice has that “Nico/ Velvet Underground” smokiness that absolutely adore. Her capacity to turn the ordinary of our life into art or, at least, a blood boiling rallying cry makes Elke one of the coolest rising artists in the music sphere.

I always say when an artist is friendly, and Elke certainly has that cool approachability that attracts people. Similar to Ashe, she is an incredible talent that is earning her right to be seen but is still shocked people are looking or rather moshing to her tracks. Yet, at Berlin, she felt like Nancy Vicious…. forget SID! In this re-telling, it was his toxicity that made Nancy sing “NO MORE!” For More Information On Elke Click Here.
