Concert Review: Eternal Summers Show Feel Like Life At Rough Trade

With a name like Eternal Summers, you have a HUGE weight over you. Eternal Summers is, literally, what we all dream of having. For many of us, the summer carries our happiest moments, when friendships felt funner, love felt deeper, and being yourself felt brighter. With the sun out, opportunity is abound, which might be why Eternal Summers newest EP is called “Every Day It Feels Like I’m Dying…”

Introducing their newest music to the Rough Trade crowd, Eternal Summers played to the irony of how being most alive kind of feels like dying. You see it all the time; the films where the guy finds out he is dying and decides to live the most out of his days. Well, she may not be dying, THANK GOD, but Nicole’s voice and style ruptures with the vibrancy and chaos of feeling like you can go everywhere, be everyone, and do everything, but yet…… you are not. The sadness of possibility is that, for all the desire, there might not be will, access, or even wisdom on how to make it reality.

“Contenders”, “Famous Last Words”, and “Forever Mine” played to the sullen dread of greatness. It is kind of ironic that for all that we pray for mighty things to happen, they can burden us, and Nicole’s voice frolics this truth as if it is a field of grains meant to be picked by her voice. There is something golden and earthy about her voice that reminds us even a diamond comes from nature. Thus, as she sings Eternal Summers pensive lyrics, she becomes the spiritual/ vocal chair for you to sit and think as Daniel and Jonathan create drum/ guitar melodies that are bright like the sunshine. Their mix of insightful lyrics on fear, love, and everything in-between with hooks blossoming and flying like butterflies across flowers show, again, that depth comes in vibrancy.

For a brisk show that uplifts your from rightful anxieties to embrace rightful optimism, I suggest Eternal Summers. Whether their instrumentals blend psych, punk, or rock, they always a contain a dreamy quality; as if they bake their songs underneath the sun and bring them to you.
