Concert Review: Finneas Redefines Masculinity And I Am HERE For it

Sometimes, I don’t think the problem with the world is that people don’t “feel” as much as people don’t know how to feel better. Note: this is just a theory. Yet, as a room full of teens, particularly girls, gathered to cheer Finneas as if he was about to win the NYC Marathon, I was SHOOKETH on how IBillie Eillish’s older brother/ songwriter is able to capture teenaged girls’ feelings so perfectly, which breaks definitions of masculinity in so many ways.

With a production that felt made for Radio City, the independent artist turned Warsaw into his dome of emotions. All of his songs nose-dived into the murky feelings of being young and not knowing who to believe in or how to believe in yourself. The most powerful moment, for me, in the night, came when he said how hard times are, especially in finding older guides. As he put it, there are not many adults figures to admire, at least, not alive. It can feel like the world is divided between a voiceless youth and loud elders; two demographics opposing each other and what they see as the future. Thus,  it is no wonder his songs sing to not knowing how to be present, especially in love.

FINNEAS – NEW GIRL (Official Music Video)

From “Let Fall In Love For The Night” to “I Lost A Friend,” Finneas might as well be a music supervisor for ever Canadian, teen drama. He absolutely strikes the balance of fun and melodrama that comes with being young and wanting it all. He is incredibly smart and unabashedly sensitive, which I feel redefines masculinity to show all you need to be is humanity. He did not appeal to teens, especially young girls, because he was “too feminine” or “too emotional,” as most of us ladies are called. He appealed to them because he had a heart, and he appealed to all because he gave them permission to accept and glorify that. Also, the girls in the crowd thought he looked like a younger, ginger Leonardo Dicaprio, which meant he was fantasy, husband material.

With a vocal range that felt woven with higher notes and textured sentimentality, Finneas’ show was both fun and introspective. He felt as emotionally satisfying as a Marvel film: giving us action, glamor, comedy, and every genre that a person would want after a hard day fo work or, in their case, school. Yet, it was his leaping from the stage to sign autographs and meet fans that made him a real star. He KNOWS how to perform like he is on the top of the charts, which technically, he is, but the key to his rise in the music game is that he knows how to act like a person. He is a young man trying to figure out what happy means just like everyone else. For More Information On Finneas Click Here.
