Concert Review: Greg Holden Turns Irving Plaza Into His Home

Greg Holden was happy to be back in New York; so much so that he contemplated going back to California. Yet, New York did not want him to leave either; with one man holding up a sign saying, “Marry Me, Greg Holden!” He laughed and said he was already getting married, but his easygoing demeanor won over the audience.

I love Greg Holden, the person, and his music is true to form. He is thoughtful, caring, and eager to assure other’s happiness, which are themes that course throughout “The American Dream,” “The Power Shift,” and “I Don’t Believe You.” Each acoustic track is quietly political in being a comment on how hard people work to survive this world. Add on the bullying workaday people receive from bosses, lying politicians, and their piling bills, and it is very rough to say life is something you are grateful for. Yet, in lyric and presence, that is what Greg Holden wants you to feel: gratitude.

Greg Holden’s voice is like a warm sweater covering you in the winter. His vocals brim like the ambers of fire within a cozy fireplace. Both images attribute to how Greg covers you with love, and coats his lyrics with a solace that explains why he wrote the mass hit, “Home.” His verses are about constantly seeking to be happy even if you have a million reasons to be sad like, your dad rejecting you for your sexuality, “Boys Is The Street.” His capacity to go beyond music’s common, thematic frame of either falling in love or falling out of it makes him richly different. People want someone to acknowledge, “I know you are working hard. I know you are poor. And I know that people can be mean and liars. Yet, you do deserve love!”

Greg Holden felt like the male Oprah of country music. He was so positive, and left the stage uplifted through songs such as, “Hold On Tight.” In an odd way, it seemed befitting that he was drinking red wine; a drink usually had at home within the intimacy of your space. Like a fine, red wine opened as you sit on your comfortable couch, Greg Holden makes you think of your days and ask whether you are truly fighting for your happiness as much as you are fighting those who try to take it. For Greg and his guitar melodies, there is no point in defending your right to love and be loved, if you are never loving to yourself. For More Information On Greg Holden Click Here.
