Concert Review: Houndmouth Give Some Good Ol’ Rock N” Roll At Bowery

Houndmouth gave a good ol’ fashion rock show. In similar effect to Saint Jhn, the night felt like a guy’s night with their ladies in toe. As I looked around at a few cowboy hats, men and gals sang along to tracks that promoted two core, human values; “Don’t ever count me out!” and “You better be real with me!”

In songs such as, “15 Years”, “Darlin, and “Black Gold”, Houndmouth roared their instruments like lions caught in traps they were unwilling to stay in. Every chorus felt like a chant or, at least, became one as the crowd felt compelled to back Matt Myers, Shane Cody, and Zak Appleby as they were their brothers in arms. The three interchanged vocals; each having a distinct, cozied voice that let their lyrics feel rested upon their range. Whether they were singing to a woman breaking their heart or singing to Heaven about breaking their backs just to get by, you cannot withdraw a sense of might and epic-ness in their songs, particularly, because of their riffing.

It felt like almost every song needed a “suite” or a moment to remember that a guitar or saxophone can speak “human” without being one. Matt Myers, especially, had these instances when he would tear into his guitar as if it was a pillow; he made it look soft, malleable, and completely owned by his talent. Yet, it was all done with a casual grace. For however much Houndmouth sang to the the uphill battles of life and the fun parties that come in between, their exhilarating music felt easygoing to them, while the audience received it like an IV bag filled with adrenaline. It certainly helped that they were all dressed in white with a splashy coat. They came out looking like Cobra Kai; ready to karate chop boredom.

Houndmouth were an experience at Bowery Ballroom. From “Come On, Illinois” to “For No One”, it was uplifting seeing an audience flock to choruses and cheers as if they were free meals for their soul. While their demeanors are coolly aloof, like a group of guys taking a roadtrip, their impact on a crowd is purely of kings. For More Information On Houndmouth Click Here.
