Concert Review: Jagwar Ma Are My New, Favorite Band At Bowery Ballroom

I have a new favorite band, and it is called Jagwar Ma. The level of “ferocities” they served in their Panorama late night edition/ concert planted in my mind that this is a band to watch. Bringing forth a ripe blend of indie sounds to dance vibes, Jagwar Ma remind people that that club is a mystical domain.

You do not escape to “the club” for nothing. The whole point of the dance scene is for you to break away from norms, duties, and the shells of skin you wear to cover your heart’s “wildness”. Thus, the darkness of Jagwar Ma’s sound truly amps up the inner need everyone has to releases their inner “bad” and have a good time. People raised their arms and caressed their lovers as if lead singer Jono Ma’s voice was a call to freedom. As he pierces high notes of grovels lower ones in seduction, people could not get enough of the genuinely, good time they were relishing. There is something liberating to a mischievous bassline and keys and notes that seem to fly through it with darkened wings. In essence, Ma’s voice felt like the streaming hand that pulled people into the dance jungle that is Jagwar Ma’s sound. Songs such as “What Love”, “Come Save Me” , “Slipping”, and “Don’t Make It Right” were amongst the tracks played, and, by title, show the aura Jagwar Ma sets as music and performance. For them, love can be a series of losses to “who you are” as a person rather than a gain of a relationship with another person. Such a message fits well into the dance- club scene because who has not gone out with a broken-heart; hopeful that a good beat can make it mend? Thus, Jagwar’s Ma emo- mystical instrumentals and lover-lorn lyrics did well to bring magic to Bowery Ballroom.

There is a feeling as if you have been lost, and their show is the only place, where for a time, you can feel found, which explained why so many people danced as if it was an “End of The World Party” rather than a Panorama one.
