Concert Review: Blond Ambition Brings The “Chic” of Heartache At Soho House
Blond Ambition played a private show at Ludlow House, in which the chic of his music met with the “chic” of the establishment. No phones up; just candles burned as Blond Ambition turned to his latest album, Slow All Over, to win the crowd. As wine glasses clinked, so did the links between ambition and love or, rather, love lost.
When you have to put the phone down, or at least, most did, a rare ambiance is created. Nowadays, to NOT “insta” a moment feels like madness. If you do not than someone will, and you will be left behind? Yet, amongst chilled beers and opens eyes were nothing but the “living room” style lounge and stage on which Blond Ambition felt like a unique television show. Instead of a family waltzing out to talk about “what matters”, it was Blond Ambition crooning and brooding over the loss of matters. Heartbreak and lust seemed to define his music, which went down smoothly with the calm atmosphere. For Blond Ambition. when you do not have love, it is as if you do not have substance. All that is interesting about is defined by love, and when it is lost then so is the intrigue; replaced by pseudo- motivations known as “drama”. From desiring your ex to dreaming of love, in general, “Confused 4EVA” and “Shasta” showed that, when all is settled, only love makes you rise. Yet, his music’s somberness was subtle but potent like, a splash of whip cream over an ice cream sundae; for all the flavors, you still taste one of heartache. Hence, Blond Ambition leaves his music to do elaborations. He stays center and stares forward as if he is telling a sergeant his tales of war.

The irony is that beneath tracks like, “Houses of Reason”, “Dillon”, and “Stupid Boy/ Girl” are bubbles of electric synths that seem like rainbows shading over his darker matter. The result is a cool contrast that met will with Ludlow Soho House. All we had to do was sit, watch the show, and relate, which Blond Ambition made happen.
