Concert Review: Joan As Police Woman Gets You “Woke” At Nublu
Watching Joan As Police Woman at Nublu, I realized I never asked why Joan added the “As Police Woman.” I have yet to google this question, and frankly I do NOT want the answer. I prefer to stay with my fantasy that she garnered this name because she feels like an episode of Glow made a baby with the Handmaid’s tale, and that baby grew up to be a rock-pop goddess.
Joan As Police Woman felt like she was part Wonder Woman/ part Joni Mitchell; giving a super heroism to raw humanity. Blessed with a voice that falls on notes as if an artist could embody autumn, you become enraptured by Joan’s ability to make your vulnerability feel like strength. In this world, we may jokes about “being woke” or “staying woke,” but these are necessary things to keep our hearts in tact. Yet, they are the hardest things to actually do. From “Tell Me” to “I Defy,” Joan presented her music like a soul that has been awakened, and is mourning that not enough are awake with her.
From womanhood to spirituality, Joan used her voice to represent the fear and fabulosity of having a conscious. While her songs can go from a groovy, pop bounce to a light, sombre melody, her verses feels like paced steps forward. She is a woman that is unafraid to say she feels broken, but is fearless in her desire to heal, which made the amount of people surrounding her performance move me. Every side of her stage was filled with gazed eyes that nodded both at her music and her message; we have to feel better to do better, which might be why she covered Prince’s “Kiss.”
Part of “staying woke” is learning that you have every right to feel happy as you do to feel angry, which is why the choice to act for happiness will include you defending your rights and self-respect so as not to be left in sadness. WOW THAT GOT DEEP LOL! Yet, Joan As Police Woman has had such a prosperous, long career because she presents mindfulness for its subtlety. The minute you feel is the minute you are human, and the moment you feel better is your chance to do better. For More Information On Joan As Police Woman Click Here.
