Concert Review: Justin Nozuka Is Vocal Opulence At LPR
Justin Nozuka’s voice is so opulent in sound that you are stunned by his simplicity. From the minute he starts singing, your souls knows it is hearing something wonderful, but his quiet smile and friendly demeanor contrast the wealth of his range. At Le Poisson Rouge, beyond the lyrics, the melodies, and instrumental suites, Nozuka’s voice, in and of itself, is power.
Nozuka’s approaches the stage as if it is an invisible wave-pool. He dips in and starts swaying his body up and down like it is being shook by, again, invisible waves. He’s never still compared to how still his music leaves you, which is why people were PROTECTIVE over their experience. A heckler tried to say, “GO JUSTIN!”, and what felt like 20 million hushes silenced her. An iPhone 10 fell to what sounded like a building collapsing, and I know people prayed it was broken out of vindictiveness for pushing them out of their Justin Nozuka moment for a milli-second. Yet, that protectiveness to cherish and absorb every bit of Nozuka’s vocality moved me.
Justin Nozuka – All I Need
It is not easy to invest yourself in a moment, but Nozuka’s makes it so by creating songs that brim with optimism. He repeats certain phrases like they are the oaths we make to ourselves to be better. From “Right By You” to “Save Him”, we have all tethered to a quote, and placed It on a mindful loop so as to make it a hopeful reality that we will love ourselves, our partners, and our world better. His capacity to create simply lyrics over instrumentals that feel as vast and encompassing as the ocean left me mystified. I understood why his fans wanted to take in every detail of his show because, in many ways, he makes music that makes beautiful every detail of being an average person.
Justin Nozuka – Warm Under the Light
I saw this with Brent Faiyaz, as well, but it is not a common experience. Nowadays so much goes into making a show or your own, artistic presence, that you have to have a special voice for everyone to simply bask in it. While both singers create verses that discuss the daily thoughts and actions we commit to get through our day, with a semblance of fulfillment, they also have voices you will not hear ANYONE else have. Nozuka is 100% one of kind; with a vocality that seems sculpted by God to give life to the statuesque reactions confounding our spirit from feeling real.
