Concert Review: Kelly Lee Owens Brings Out The Dark Vibes Of Club Lives
I reviewed Kelly Lee Owens self-titled debut, and her Good Room performance played into a wizardry of dark electronica. Now I am not saying a dark-robed Gandalf grabbed a staff of dark-synths, but there were definitely moments of such a vibe. As Kelly is surrounded by her mixing tables, she is casting dark magic, and, like the famous series by J.R.R. Tolkien, it makes her audience move and even sit to her music like an enrapturing book.
While when you think of electronica, you think of heavy basslines and constant motion, which Lee Owens garners, her music can hit you like a hallucinogen. As her rhythms crawl into your brain, you find yourself moreso envisioning and swaying to thoughts that are euphoric and fantastical. It is as if Good Room became a haunted club, in which ghosts and persons danced amongst each other to songs such as, “Anxi” and “Bird” .I had mentioned these songs feel like intimate interplays between the wonder and pain that can strike you as you seek the night to forget your day. Hence, why it has such a hypnotic but phantasmic feel; what more than wonder and pain to define your day. From the highs or curiosity to the lowliness of boredom, these sentiments scale humanity’s approach to their life. As Owens’ instrumentals twine and twinkle between seductive and seedy, you are confronted with how much you needed to dream. Proving that a club is always escapism, but it is up to the DJ to define how that escape takes place.
Kelly Lee Owens is a cool-headed, focused DJ, which only amps that fantasy of her sound. I further her dark, mystical vibe, because she is not exactly a show to get “crazy amped” as is common with nightlife, which is why I find her refreshing to the club scene. Sometimes, you t just want to dance, and, other times, you want SEE something. Owens may not be an “entertainer”, but she makes you see art. For More Information On Kelly Lee Owens Click Here.
