Concert Review: Keshi Goes Euphoria On Rough Trade

Whether he had a wireless or wire mic, at Rough Trade, Keshi’s fans adored him. He could do wrong with the Lo-Fi R&B dreams he called his songs. I was absolutely SHOOKETH to see how the crowd devoured his every move. If he made one, light jest, the entire crowd died laughing as if they had just binge-watched every episode of Workaholics. His power over them came from multiple sources; his absolute sweetness, the fact that he is an Asian- American R&B singer, which is rare/ #represent, and that his music is genuinely good.

As he bopped around the stage like he was singing to the girl he was falling in love with or out of or crushing on super hard. With nearly every person in the room, including Keshi, looking like they just came off the set of Euphoria, Keshi tapped into the lovelorn woes of teendom. From 14 to 22, “school year loves” feel really powerful because your only issue is how to finish that final paper on time. You know the one that you knew about since the beginning of the semester, but only started writing  3 days before it is due. For Keshi, your “paper procrastination” came from the fact that life is a world of love and fun, and the only reason you don’t feel either is because you think you are not worth it.

Super-smiley and interactive with the crowd, you would have thought Keshi’s show was an after-school reunion. The yellow bus dropped us off at his house, Rough Trade, and we were all chilling and drinking. While the crowd was pretty young, their excitement came from how Keshi showed young people suffer from “old people” problems. Why? Because even when you are 18, you have wants and romantic crushes. Keshi understands that because he is living it with synth-waves and strides. Thus, it was no wonder that people bought out the merch section and and even came bearing gifts. The audience had no problem talking to Keshi, even when he was on stage, but, in the end, we were there for his songs.

Keshi’s voice is harmlessly saccharine. He is like going into Dylan’s Candy Shop, eating every candy, and NEVER getting Diabetes or a sugar rush. He delivered his vocals like a friend telling you, the listener, love is the greatest thing to complicate my life. Frankly, it is because, once you fall for someone, you are always linked to them; the fear is whether that love will be forever or not. For More Information On Keshi Click Here.
