Concert Review: Kevin Garrett Sings To Love And Uncle Stephen At Bowery

Only Kevin Garrett could give a quiet, even tear inducing ballad after discussing how he called Stephen Colbert the uncle he never had, but that is his charm. After seeing him play his album, Hoax, at a private show, I was curious to see how his humor and stage presence would entertain a bigger, packed crowd. Through sheer wit and impassioned delivery, he was able amplify that he is a smart guy confounded by love.

Beyond typical hilarity, Garrett’s humor elaborates the heartbreak of his songs. Similar to Sasami, Garrett’s songs sing to the epiphany that there is a difference between literal intelligence and emotional intelligence. You can be smart but irrational with love, and tracks like, ‘Faith You Might,” “Running From,” and “It Don’t Bother Me At All” played like a man trying to calm himself down. The perks about singing to a bigger venue is that, naturally, your songs play differently. They garner newer reactions and meanings, of which Garrett’s music exemplified every time you had to breathe in and have faith in love.

Kevin Garrett – In Case I Don’t Feel

Trust is vital for love, and its issues do not only stem from fidelity. For Garrett, the struggle with believing in love comes from conceiving that someone could love your through it “all” and you could love them back. Sure, you can love a person for life, but can you be “in love” forever? I think so, and songs such as, “Precious” and “Pray You Catch Me,” seem to think so, as well. With that in mind, his voice feels insular and intimate. He closes his eyes and inches towards the mic as if he was whispering his verses into Love’s ear. Thus, every fear and hope he has for relationships is received by Love itself. Its a beautiful, poetic image delivered by a guy that, again, feels like Stephen Colbert is the uncle he never had (lol!).

Garrett is the artist that will always thrive because they believe personality is as important as talent, of which he is not wrong. When you fall in love with an artist’s song, in some ways, you feel like you have fallen for them as a person. It is as if their lyrics have revealed their inner world, and with rhythms that brim like a light fire at night, Garrett shows he too cozies with romance.
