Concert Review: Sharon Van Etten Makes Me Feel Like A Grown Woman At Webster

There are many divisions in life, but few speak about one of the biggest divides occurring within people: the person you thought you would be versus the person you became. From the beginning of Sharon Van Etten’s Webster Hall show, there was an electric maturity and wisdom that vaped through the air. The audience was about to witness the music and mind of a woman that has grown up, and, for her, that means confidently settling into your own skin.

Before boygenius…THERE WAS SHARON VAN ETTEN! (lol!) Yet, I make that statement with a level of seriousness. Each person paves the way for another, and, at times, it only takes a few years for a wave to rise. Now, it seems like a greater time to be a young lady figuring herself out, but Sharon speaks to the young woman that has realized there might not be anything to figure. “No One’s Easy to Love,” “Serpents,” “One Day,” and “You Shadow” played to those that have given up trying to “solve” the rubix cube known as their heart. Instead, they are trying to sit back, settle down, and observe their inner self like a show, and Sharon GIVES A SHOW!

As she walked unto the stage, with her pointy boots, and the lights dimmed to a red-orange, with whispered verses in the back, her presences felt powerful. I am talking Melisandre riding into the Battle of Winterfell POWERFUL! She scopes the stage with a prowess that could make a jaguar cower, and, once she starts singing, you feel like you are witnessing someone SAY SOMETHING!. She fuels her voice with passion and importance; making songs such as, “Comeback Kid,” “Love More,” and “Stay” feel like decrees. Her firm, affirming delivery rocketed thanks to the harmonious, backing vocals of Heather Woods Broderick and Norah Jones accompanying her for a stunning rendition of “Seventeen.”

Beyond her voice and style, the key to Sharon Van Etten’s show is confidence. You feel like you are witnessing someone that is, at least, okay with who they are, which, in these times, can feel like a major feat. Thus, her ability to croon rocker tracks like powerful ballads of self-love helps her audience realize that everyone struggles be better, but not all of use surpass such woes be a star like, Sharon Van Etten.
