Concert Review: La Dame Blanche Summons Spirits At SOB’s
WELP! If you ever wondered what it would be like to go to a spiritual ceremony, you might come close with La Dame Blanche. With a cigar and a flute, she summoned ancestral spirits at SOB’s, and obliterated conceptions of what is Hip Hop/ Latin Reggae. She is rivetingly different because she is everything we were.
When you look back at human history you will find that our indigenous ancestors believed that the spiritual life was the only life. Spirituality was integrated into their everyday, but history recalls their material devastation by war crimes and genocide. Yet, we have to remember what they taught us about humanity and the universe, in that, they knew we were connected. It is that note that makes La Dame Blanche such a sparkling and inclusive performer; she embodies life by embracing it.
Now more than ever, I am looking to my fellow Latinx to spread our community, culture, and caring natures in the face of the chaos brewing against us in the US. The only way you can combat darkness is by being light, and La Dame Blanche is aware of that. She smiles and moves her hips as if she lives in welcome. She reminded me of one of my favorite artists, La Lupe, whom approached an audience like family: joking with them and unafraid to command love from them, as well. Moreover, she shared the icon’s voice and capacity to turn lyrics for their emotional purity. That vibrancy represents the roots of Latinx culture that, yes, has opened it to the hate and malice of others, but has also opened its spiritual borders to love and passion.
If there is one thing that La Dame Blanche can do, it is spit “candela”. With tracks like “Traka”, “Esa Noche”, “Yo Quiero Trabajar”, and “Las 5 AM’, it almost takes you aback how she can flow a verse as if she Eminem and Nicki Minaj’s Cuban baby, but then sing like she was belting Cuba’s national anthem at The Met Opera House. You do not, often, think modern Hip Hip with Afro- Cuba, but both carry a tenacious elegance. They promote the idea that you can own your grandness in the face of those who call it madness. Thus, it was no surprise that crowd broke out in movement and cheers as their souls had exploded in feeling. La Dame Blanche demands that you give her your hearts, and whether through her flow or flute, you do. For More Information on La Dame Blanche Click Here.
