Concert Review: Lauren Aquilina Creates A Stoner Ballad At Bowery Ballroom

Never in my life did I think I would hear a most gorgeous ballad on revealing to your mother that you are a pot-head (Tobacco In My Sheets). Yet, Lauren Aquilina is unmatchable in talent. Her range is powerfully high (pun unintended), and allows her to flutter the nuances of living in a world that is very toxic but yet wants you to love yourself.

There is a saying that “Hurt people hurt people,” but if everyone is hurting then why are many choosing to heal? Not every person with a wound decides to wound others, and Lauren Aquilina sings to those choosing the harder path. She stands for the ones that are fighting not to go “Psycho” and say “How Would You Like It” to a boyfriend that berated and cheated on them only to leave, or the ones whom refuse to give up their dignity and become the “Fools” that others use to feel false pride. Her ability to make self-empowerment a daily choice, hidden in the most surprising and silliest of situations, is amazing, and made a few of the women in the audience cry tears into their beers.

Similar to Sasha Sloan, Lauren Aquilina has a “my girl” quality with ladies that make the females of the crowd look to her like a best friend they can vent to. She uses her verses to build a self-understanding; allowing herself to be open to her heart and forgiving to the fact that it has broken. UGH! How could we NOT feel such a truth?! Thus, the audience looked both impressed and moved by the details of her work, and how a young woman, alone on stage, could look like every woman feeling alone on earth. The result was a performance that gained her FANS!

You know you have succeeded as an opener when people walk away from the show talking about you as much as the headliner. This was no easy feat for Lauren Aquilina. Many are, rightfully,  OBSESSED with Sasha Sloan, and are seeking more young songstresses that can sing to our struggles. Lauren Aquilina does, which is why she is one to watch.
