Concert Review: Leif Vollebekk Is A Sexy Elton John At Rough Trade
With Angel music introducing him, Leif Vollebekk was a Heavenly heart and a total goofball. At Rough Trade, he was both alarmed and attracted to the intimacy of the seated event; constantly asking if everyone was okay. He is extremely kind and thoughtful, which explains why his music is beautiful and emotionally fractured. In life, though you can be one person, you can live many lives, even at once. For Leif, there is the life you live in your mind and the one you live in your heart.

With his grand piano, Leif serenaded the crowd and amusingly rambled about the many stories that lead him to songs. He is super funny and bright; coming up with witty remarks that make you say, “Huh?” I can honestly say I have never heard anyone refer to themselves as a “Sexy Elton John!” Yet, like the singer, Leif paints the emotional misadventures of a dreamer; a man living a fantasy in his mind and a less than easy reality in his heart. Of course, such a mood is relatable. Often, we treat our mind as the “logical” part of us; the aspect that reigns in our heart’s delusions. Yet, the truth is it can be what makes us deranged, and that pressure you feel in your heart is the realization that your dreams are real to you but not, necessarily, to those around you.

What I love about Leif is that he is a “classic, piano man.” There was a very “old school” dynamic to his presentation that was both charming and new. It is rare that you feel like you met the artist as a person, but, at Rough Trade, Leif could help but reveal the genius of his humanity. His songs were long and full of twinkling arrangements that ignited sing-alongs, even if they were new tracks. For instance, “Feel The Light” was a verse he had the audience repeat, and, for me, represented a primary theme in his songs. Nearly every track was about achieving a level of clarity about the road or relationship your life is in, of which “light” was a symbol for clinging hope that, no matter, you will be okay.
Whether you are letting go of a dream or fighting to have it realized, Leif sings to you, and his voice does have an angelic range. His vocal notes feel celestial; adding a note heavenliness and aerial grace to how he emotes them. Hence, the fact that he is a good guy makes his great talent feel even more special.
