Concert Review: Lewis Capaldi Is Your Roommate For Life At Bowery Ballroom
Seeing Lewis Capaldi at Bowery Ballroom, his “je ne sais quoi” charm finally bloomed to reveal why his show was so packed; he feels like your roommate. Yes, he is superbly talented and can rasp high notes as if God was shaving a lighting bolt to toss, but he also make pube jokes and questions his likability just like you best flat mate. At 21, Lewis Capaldi feels approachable because, in a way, he has a lot to approach.
“I wrote this song when I was younger a few years back. I was 17, and now I’m 21!” said Capaldi as if life had given him a lot enlightening experiences between the ages. The quote stood out to me for two reasons. The first is that the lady in front of me audibly grunted; as if hearing such age numbers made her grow more grey hairs. The second was because of his “roommate” vibe/ friendliness, and the feeling that, when you hear his words and see the raw abrasions of their emotions, it doesn’t link up. How can the guy whom makes you laugh and giggles that the recorded version of his songs are much better then sing to feeling unworthy of love, always self-sabotaging himself through relationships, and, ultimately, ask “Mercy” for his heart’s “Bruises”?
Lewis Capaldi – Lost On You (Live)
The endearing quality of Lewis Capaldi is that, like Oliver Hazard or George Ezra, he shows the “fun guy” has a hard time receiving the fun he gives. For all the romance he sings to and all the love he wishes to accomplish, somehow, he cannot attain it, which is so true for most of us. Believe it or not, in this world, I think there is more good than bad, but being good does not always feel good, and that is where Capaldi’s tracks like “Maybe”, “Rush”, and “Fade” feel relevant to every person who has loved. Blessed with a voice that pulls emotions as if they have sunk into the bottom of the ocean, and only his vocals can reach them, Capaldi’s music asks not whether we or our partner gives their heart as much as why don’t we feel the beats?

At Bowery Ballroom, Lewis Capaldi was just a cool guy from Ireland; encouraging everyone to have a good time and sincerely downplaying how good he was as performer was, oddly, the right choice for such songs. Whether you are 17, 21, or 800 years old, love confounds us in how magical and dumb you can feel, all at once. For More Information On Lewis Capaldi Click Here.
