Concert Review: Lewis Watson Is A Poet Of Love At Bowery Ballroom

A few months ago, I had the pleasure of seeing Johnny Flynn and was further convinced by Low Roar this weekend that a room can be filled with quiet wonder as much as loud, electro-waves. At times, all you need is a guitar and a message to leave a stamp on people’s minds, and counter common notions that the bigger you go in production, the longer you stay in memory. Lewis Watson’s performance at Bowery Ballroom showed that simple is beautiful, and silence can make a greater statement.

As a performer, its eerie to play with quietude, which Watson does throughout his performance. His songs for, literally being music, play off as if Silence was an entity that has been eager to say something to us, and now decided to do so through Watson’s youthful voice. Something about Watson’s vocals radiates youthfulness, inquisitiveness, and lightheartedness, despite, so many of his songs singing to the struggle of keeping those aspects of ourselves. “Deep The Water”, “Give Me Life”, “Hello Hello” are all songs from Watson’s newest album, Midnight, and are pure examples of his capacity to see the better of life and protect that perspective. When Watson sings to love and the beauty of his partner, you wish you could turn to your boyfriend and give him a notepad. There is a romantic sentimentality such as in, “Maybe We’re Home” and “Forever” where he brings out the beauty of relationships not just in the connection you make, but in your desire and protectiveness for that connection. We all know the most beautiful thing to see, next to a couple being loving to each other, is one standing strong for each other. Thus, singing these tunes and standing alone on the stage with just lights on him, a guitar with him, and voice that is equal to the sky in brightness, you felt as if Lewis Watson was born to sing to and for love. Such a sweetness, made you cheer him, love him, and even gain your own protectiveness for him; as if you had found a piece of treasure that had been locked away for too long.

Simply, I enjoyed Lewis Watson. He is not just a youthful voice for dreamy Millennials, but a fresh lyricist, whose words bring positivity through their beauty. I could watch him play all day with the peace and sheer friendliness he offers the crowd by being eternally humbled to be crossing ponds to serve musical flowers to us, the audience. Yes, I know that was a fluffy, last statement, but, when someone makes you feel good, you find yourself with a smiling humor and unabashed silliness, which could easily describe Watson. He is just so approachable and witty, beyond talented, that you have to applaud. For More Information On Lewis Watson Click Here.
