Concert Review: Lisa Loeb Talks Her Life And Sings Her Hits At Cafe Carlyle

Thanks David Andrako For The Wonderful Pictures

Lisa Loeb is playing a run at Cafe Carlyle, and the singer presents her luxury lounge show more like a conversation with friends and sing-along in between. Personally, I was surprised to see how talkative the songstress is, but, again, unexpected does not mean bad. On the contrary, it can mean surprisingly good, and, for the first time, in Cafe Carlyle series of playing stars, Lisa Loeb presented herself as person first and a singer second.

While in my previous shows, singers never went beyond the invisible glam of “the fourth wall”, Lisa Loeb felt refreshingly “regular”. She talked about making pancakes her kids refused to eat, and how it humorously inspired her children’s song, “The Disappointing Pancake”. She discussed being young, and feeling impatient that hard word did not have an instant payoff, but later on had a great one when her friend, Ethan Hawke, gave her song, “You Say” to Ben Stiller for Reality Bites. The greatness of Lisa Loeb’s lovely and lucky life was humbling because it felt like a giant “It Could Happen To You!” celebration. She is a famous singer – songwriter who whose series of accidental happenings led to really great opportunities like, love. Taking a business meeting as she chose to move back to New York led her to meet her husband, of which, in response, I am currently taking a million business meetings (lol!). Moreover, she handled the slightly drunken heckling of a fan, who WANTED Lisa Loeb to know she was a FAN! Yet, Lisa was all smiles, and by the end of the night, despite a guitar that refused to tune, she was taking suggestions and sang “Hurricane” and “Dance With Angels”. Loeb happily swore no show would be the same as the previous one, and kept her promise by inviting Ru Paul’s Drag Race star Alexis Michelle to sing “Rainbow Connection”, and make our inner child gleeful with the Kermit reference. For viewers, Lisa Loeb is timeless, in part, because she has a childlike approach to life.

Loeb is a rejuvenating, sunny personality. She cannot stop cracking jokes and telling tales about her life, which frankly I could absorb like a good novel. She is a great person doing great, and in between songs, you are enveloped by how personable she is, and a exemplary that good people succeed. Yes, Loeb has written several hits such as, “Truthfully”, but this show is a hit because of her as a person more than as a singer.
