Concert Review: Lissie Gives Her Heart To Bowery Ballroom
“You ever heard of Lissie?” asked one woman to another. “Oh, you are in for a treat?” While one friend gave the history of Lissie, the other woman was prepped the young lady as if she was in the initiation phase of a cult. Yet, a fan following might as well be a cult based and furthered on the idea that a song captures life as it is and should be. In the Book of Lissie, females are empowered to embrace life, not according to image, but according to heart.
At times, we think female empowerment is this “literal” thing or process, but it is actually simple. It is seeing a woman completely in tune with her humanity; both acknowledging and owning that she has it. Dressed in a long, simple dress, Lissie landed on that stage like an angel ready to transfer her cool, folkish pop into an orchestrated, “rock- pop” dream. This vocalist is KNOWN for her ability to peel through the layers of an emotion like one would an onion in their hands. She has a voice that legitimately verbalizes feelings. While the rest of us try to find descriptive words to present pain and joy, Lissie simply has to hum and you say, “Yeah, that is it!”

From “Blood & Muscle” to “Don’t You Give Up On Me”, Lissie opened the door to her heart and made you take off your shoes to walk in. Her concert is her intimate space, which is why she rocks lunges back and forth towards the mic, and jumps up and down as if her lyrics were the clouds from which she soars. The dynamism of her movement is contagious as you find yourself leaping in place as if to say, “Yes, the dream is almost here.” What is the dream? Well, that is where her layer of introspection feels added. For Lissie, there is no one dream; “Feels Good”, “Hero”, and “Love Blows” are proofs that dreams change because so does how you define happiness and love.Lissie – Blood and Muscle
Similar to Kate Nash, Lissie has what I call the “Bridget Jones” element or rather creates music/ motivation that allows women to feel like they are beings meant to grow. I am not going to accept the same things I used to from guys. I am not going to dream for the same things I used to as a little girl. Moreover, I am not going to love myself as little as I did yesterday. While there were guys there that felt the same “Power of Lissie”, you could note how the ladies gravitated to a person/ artist that pushed you to grow up and grow a lot.
