Concert Review: Lolo Zouaï Goes Through High Highs To Low Lows At Bowery

With a room packed, Lolo Zouaï looked upon Bowery Ballroom with wonder at what she had achieved. People had bought her shirts like they were Willy Wonka tickets and sang her songs as if they were biblical; even crooning over her French verses. It was amazing to see a crowd have such an avid connection with someone that, technically, was making their debut.

As Lolo laughed at herself and chatted with the crowd, giddiness exuded from her pores. You could tell joy and the realization of her rise were striking her, which made her double the impact of succulent tracks like, “Desert Rose,” “Beaucoup,” “Blue,” and, of course, “High High To Low Lows.” Yes, I said “succulent” to describe them because they are sensually delicious. Lolo Zouaï creates soundscapes that feel like bodies draped in cream and sweet fruit. They feel sultry, tenacious, fleshy, and made her crowd feel sexy as each bassline scintillated with heaviness. Yet, the depth of her sound is meant to hold the fervent pining of her heart.

What I LOVED about Lolo’s music is that it made both falling in love and breaking up sound like weighted crosses. It was as if she sees relationship like a bag filled with a ton of gold bricks; while upon sight, you think what luck and luxury, then you wonder how you will carry and spend it. In a similar way, romance changes your life and how you live it. Her ability to capture that in verse, and lyrically reel it like a French noir film was hypnotizing. The audience felt like they were watching the most elegant, guttural representation of love and how it only can take over your body if it takes your soul first. There is something really dark and really light about that image, of which Lolo imbues it through her rhythms and lush voice.

Vocally, Lolo pulps and tenderizes her notes as if they were made to be the bits of juice given to thirsty hearts. The audience was ENAMORED with her, which is why her smiley nature felt like a surprising but welcomed contrast. On one hand, she gave you seedily dreamed blends of R&B and Pop, and then she would laugh and say how grateful she was for our attendance.
