Concert Review: Bad Bunny “Siempre Picheo” En MSG

Bad Bunny KNOWS he is the KING of Latin Trap, and, in a way, we are witnessing the rise of a forefather. I remember when Spanish Reggae fueled Reggaeton, and, suddenly, Daddy Yankee and Don Omar, two men who had tried for a decade to bust through the music scene, were household names. At Madison Square Garden, an audience witnessed the achieved blessing of someone that worked hard and got rewarded. 

Entering MSG, MI GENTE were READY with Puerto Rican flags and light-up bunny ears. You know that you are a big deal if you are making GROWN, LATINO MEN, voluntarily, wear bunny ears that light up. #killingmachismo Everyone wore symbols of Bad Bunny, like his signature shades and eye emblem, as if to wear “him” was to show that they were apart of an amazing community: Latinx. As Bad Bunny called out every Latino nation, the crowd cheered with so much joy and pride, Donald Trump had a nightmare that night. There was no denying that we were here, have always been here, and, like Bad Bunny, have incredible tales of success that define American cultura. 

What I loved most about Bad Bunny’s performance was his details. His stage was a cross, of which every image you could think of, from Blink 182 posters to Saharan deserts, splashed across and showed Bad Bunny is everything. His genius is that he cannot be boxed in; he could be a little punk-rock or throw in a Bachata flare. He could rock claw-like, neon green nails and twerk. He could also be hoisted 100 feet into the air and sing to a beat-drop as if dancing is more comfortable when you are hanging above tens of thousands of people. It was a magical, fulfilling night for him that felt so precise and planned, with his vision, that I walked away with even more admiration. 

As a performer, Bad Bunny es eléctrico. He has a big personality that he pumps into songs from his debut, X 100PRE, covers, such as  Daddy Yankee’s Dura or Farruko’s Krippy Kush, and when he is sharing the stage with the liked of Arcangel. For about 2 hours, you are not at the Bad Bunny show but on the Bad Bunny ride. It was a concert that exemplified pure fun, and made me admire MSG’s infrastructure.
