Concert Review: Lonely Island Bring The Silly To King’s Theatre

As I watched a mass audience sing in full voice, “I just had sex and it felt so good,” I thought. “Is this what world peace looks like? Is this what a happier world feels like?” It sure seemed so at Lonely Island’s performance in King’s Theatre. Their show felt like a rated R version of Disney’s Toy Story; a cast of happy, playful characters that have no problem putting their “D**k In A Box.”

It was kind of crazy to see the silliest Hip Hip show at the historical, gorgeous King’s Theatre. The perk of loving Lonely Island is that they totally feed our inner 13 year old; the one that could laugh at throwing anything to the ground or  the word “jizz.” I had forgotten how MANY hits Lonely Island have designed “The Creep” to “I’m On A Boat.” CLASSICS! Even Chris Parnell came out to do “Lazy Sunday,” which I believe was the first SNL Digital Short. Before Youtube was the video beast it is today, Andy Samberg, Jorma Taccone, and Akiva Schaffer were amongst the first in helming the idea of web skits.

The internet is a powerful tool, and Lonely Island have always used it for comedy. Their show feels like a whirlwind of memes, Instagrammable captions, and laser cats. It is an eye-extravaganza of every colorful, click-bait vine video you could find. Hence, why I loved seeing them as King’s. This theatre is defined elegance, and people payed for its Ambassador program, which includes premium seating and in-house meals, just to hear Lonely Island confirm, “It’s okay when it’s in a three-way!” I have never seen so many people in a VIP/ a concert hall pour their hearts into a song about the dangers of a “Boombox,” “Diaper Money,” to the incredibly “Shy Ronnie.” Of course, seeing everyone from “Jose And Mark” to “Ras Trent” made me feel like I was living my #bestlife.

I am not surprised that Lonely Island are excellent performers or that they really gave one of the best concerts I have ever seen. They are three goofballs/ best friends that managed to turn being silly and creatively nerdy into a comedic tour-de-force. Their show was hilarious, fun, and one where joy felt achieved. I have seen a lot of WONDERFUL concerts, but I can’t say they achieved a child-like euphoria quite Lonely Island. Click Here For More Information On King’s Theatre.
