Concert Review: LP Is THE VOICE At Brooklyn Steel

LP Is A BIG DEAL, and I had NO IDEA! Entering Brooklyn Steel, it was clear she had her diehard fans, and, like Lights, they relied on her as a source of catharsis. She is the artist you turn on when you you want to turn down your guards.

First, I was SHOOKETH by her vocals. In appearance, she looks like a “badass”. The woman who has no problem challenging you to meet her in a parking lot! You may laugh, but she approaches the stage and guitar like a warrior. LP is NOT backing down to any challenges, but that does not mean Life is backing down from challenging her, which is why her music enraptured the crowd. Who does not feel like they are in a personal face-off: you versus the cosmos! Yet, similar to Sia, she had a voice that makes you feel like the cosmos will lose if they try to duke it out with you.

I swear; if I threw LP’s voice into the universe, the stars would gather around it as if they had met a shining equal. She hit vocal notes with the same ease a pen hits paper; it is as if music was made to be associated with her. This could be why throughout her show, people sporadically lifted their hands as if a sermon was being given. You know you feel the Holy Spirit when a hand goes up as if you could grasp it. “Tightrope”, “You Want It All”, and “Up Against Me” had hands rising in comprehension; life can make you feel like it is placing you on a line that you did not ask to join.

From heartbreak to the simply pangs of anxiety, whether someone is hurting us or we are hurting ourselves, we know how it is to feel misplaced and like we do not belong where we are. Yet, LP’s voice is home. She has written songs that display the range of her voice and even her acting. Tracks like “Recovery”, “Girl Go Wild”, and “Levitator” gave her the opportunity to move around the stage as if it was her bedroom: she either wanted to sullenly stay by the mic like we do in bed when we are feeling down, or shake across like we do when we feel pumped by opportunity and want jump on our mattress. Either way her graciousness towards the crowd, and gracefulness at making sure each one was empowered by her vocality earned her that SOLD OUT sign that adorned Brooklyn Steel that night.
