Concert Review: Magic City Hippies Prove We All Need Love

Entering Magic City Hippies’ show, I was taken aback by the buzz of the room. It was packed and people chatted like bees waiting for the queen to announce a new honeycomb. There was such a good feeling in the room that matched EXACTLY what Magic City Hippies wanted to bring for a crowd of twenty-somethings wondering how long do we qualify as young.

I’m sincerely asking that Q by the way: not that I am 80. Yet, as more and more twenty-somethings become thirty-somethings, with no stability, we wonder if “adulting” does not provide the promised security then can we still count as ourselves as young? Magic City Hippies’ music oddly played to this dilemma filled with lyrics and chords that lingered like the winding roads we call “life goals.” The only difference is that Robby Hunter can make an existential crisis feel like the breeze that grazes you on the way to Starbucks. His voice is emotionally easy, which made the set and their humor feel equally caressing.
Magic City Hippies – Franny

The thing about life is that it continues even if you feel stuck or like your feet drag more than walk. Hence, tracks like, “What Would I Do,” “Bull Ride,” “Heart Wants,” and “Indiana” were amongst the many tracks that felt genreless in their fusions but folksy in their overall effect. Something about imagining life as a road and your relationships like pit-stops always feels folksy to me, especially when the band comes of like a bunch of brothers exploring the world. They feel alive, which, technically, they are, but they have the vibrancy of people that no longer care about caring.
Magic City Hippies – Float (Lyric Video)

I know it may seem like a strange compliment, this is the band for the twenty-something becoming a thirty-something, but their is a mature sweetness to Magic City Hippies’ show. At least, a sweetness that is still young, but is more observant that time is fleeting, which one year, alone, can make you observe. Thus, as couples kissed, friends laughed, and brothers chugged beers, Magic City Hippies provided a night that made you move enough to forget you had work tomorrow.
