Concert Review: Megan Davies Is A Modern Hippie At Mercury Lounge

“Hippie” is a word that leaves people torn. Frankly, I love and own any time the title when it is associates to me. Moreover, I find it crazy that, in this world, when peace and love is what we most want, those seeking it are most degraded. At Mercury Lounge, Megan Davies sang to the “hippies” that want a better day while trying to feel like they still are having a good one.

Playing singles off her EP, Bad Poetry, Davies proved why this was a perfect title for her. We all have written down deep, philosophical thoughts that we found both life-altering and absolutely embarrassing if made public. Yet, Davies is a singer; her every thought is a platform for publicity. Thus, her verses in songs such as, “Moonlight” and “Doesn’t Matter,” were revealing to the world her silliness and seriousness at embracing life. Such dynamics play into Megan’s every move.

She is a proud weed-smoker, only lied to her parents once when she went to Baltimore without their permission, and can make a sick, acoustic version of Due Lipa’s “New Rules.” Megan Davies is not just talented and warm as a person but also casually candid. She reveals her vulnerabilities with a serendipitous charm; taking what others hide and wearing it around her voice like a scarf. Such an image perfectly describes how her voice covers you with its simplicity. Like her melodies, Davies is uncomplicated. She goes for folksy, mellow arrangements to represent a young woman enjoying how unfussy she is.

People say being “easygoing” is a weakness, and that is not easy to NOT take in for those that are. I, myself, have been told I am “too kind.” Yet, Davies writes music for people trying to be okay with that attribute, and trying to see that being light-hearted is a universal goal that they have achieved by nature.
