Concert Review: Milk & Bone Show Love Lies At Baby’s All Right
I have long been a fan of Milk & Bone. Certain artists make me want to wave a flag of surrender when I hear their music and say, “Okay, you have conquered me!” Playing from their newest album, Deception Bay, Milk And Bone took over Baby’s All Right like they were occupying this Brooklyn hot-spot and synthesizing it into a new world.
I am, practically, embarrassed by how much I LOVE Milk & Bone’s sound. Their performance is truly one that is defined by their music. While, with most artists’s concerts, you feel like you are meeting the person or energy that created the sound; their concert feels like you are, literally, meeting their music. It is too powerful an energy to be confounded to them, which is why the duo stood behind a strobed table as if they were taking double duty, and guiding the U.S.S. Enterprise into proper landing. Seriously, Deception Bay became interplanetary, and drawing on the playfulness and focus of Camille Poliquin & Laurence Lafond-Beaulne at delivering their songs, made tracks like, “Set In Stone”, “Deception Bay”, and “Kids” feel like stars we were capturing while on hyper-drive
Milk & Bone – Set in Stone [Audio]
Deception Bay is stronger album than their debu:t Little Mourning. Not at all diminishing the power of that record, but it was an introduction to their music story, while Deception Bay played like a climax: epic, fluid, romantically challenging, and 100% invigorating. You almost forget that nearly all their songs from Deception Bay, from “BBBlue” to “Nevermore”, are partially tragic because they sound so sexy. Only in concert, did I realize Milk & Bone are like cosmic captains flying through love’s treacherous terrain. Their lyrics really do elaborate that a vulnerable heart can made akin to a foolish one, but what can you do? Not fall in love?

As strobe lights ranges in color and pacing, Milk & Bone’s music spread, curdled, folded, and flowed through Baby’s atmosphere like a bedsheet swirling through a slow-motion whirlpool. These ladies have learned what it is to sonically draw in a crowd, hypnotize them through harmonies that feel soft like a feather, and pierce them lyrically as if that feather was dipped in love’s poison. Milk & Bone hush their voices as gently as a hand caressing a dagger, which is why they enrapture: they electrify danger and darkness through sultry baselines and mystique melodies.
