Concert Review: Minke Asks Three Questions To NYC
In this life, there are three questions you are BOUND to ask yourself: what should I leave? what can I make better? what should I simply enjoy? These questions will be asked within every aspect of your life: from dreams to relationships. For Minke, they are the basis of all her songs, of which she played her new EP, The Tearoom, at Soho House.
From “Too Late” to “Rest,” every song Minke played spoke to these existential queries. You may not see them as “difficult” or “scary,” but what if you have a partner that you feel is fading out their love for you. Do you leave the relationship, work to make it better, or try to see and enjoy “the good” you still have? This dilemma goes for everything, but Minke’s sound is a beautiful response. She is an EXCELLENT guitar player, and creates melodies that make you want cry, laugh, and love that you can do both. It is as if she sees guitar strings like emotional veins, and, as an artist, she can pump her heart with them.
Minke – Maybe 25 (Official Music Video)While it is confirmed that Minke can make a guitar an emotional instrument, her voice is equally sentimental. She closes her eyes and inches her lips towards the mic as if to sing was to hush her thoughts. As an artist, she is an inquisitive mind; constantly asking herself what changes she needs to make that will lead to a better life. Yet, for me, the fact that you ask is the beginning to leading one as seen in songs such as, “Maybe 25” and “Something Bigger.” Thus, her quiet, pensive vocality come off like a delicate, sonic seal that she is an artist to tune in when you feel like you need to tune out.
Minke – Gold Angel | Mahogany SessionSome choose to escape “deep songs” when they feel bombarded by their own thoughts, while others choose to hear more philosophical, thoughtful tracks when they simply want to fall on a clearer vision. Minke is for those that choose the latter. Her songs sift through your mind to conclude that you never stop questioning what you can do better, but don’t forget to enjoy what you are doing well.
