Concert Review: NanaBcool Is All About The Music At Pianos NYC
When it comes to Pianos NYC, it is a revolving door of exceptional, starting artists. Yet, nowadays saying you are “beginning” your career has NOTHING to do with your merit, talent, or even the amount of time you have spent “making” it. The “new” that comes before “artist” is more a reflection of the newness you are to the crowd. Frankly, with how high standards have arisen in the music business, you have to be at your top game from upon your entrance as a player. Exhibit A of my point comes in the form of NanaBcool.
Entering Pianos, the turnout for NanaBcool was packed; as if he was this hidden relic that only “true” New Yorkers knew about. The energy was frenetic, and, as he displayed, an honor for the artist whose love for music is founded on just that: love. There are some people that put first their love for the stage and the attention being on it brings, and then there are those like NanaBcool, whom though can rock an arena, will always bow to music as an entity. While we expect and define “diva” vocality to women, there are the “divos” whom can spread and spike their vocals like some Eggnog with Liquor (#christmas reference). It was invigorating to see his capacity to soften and gracefully liquify his voice like, he was pouring it on concrete, to then turn around and harden/ crevice himself like the ground for some spoken flows on his quest to conquer a love interest. Watching him perform was like taking a roller-coaster in the dark; for however much you try to predict the next vocal rise and drop…. you cannot.
Beyond his own absorption and gratefulness for the crowd, was the audience’s own thankfulness at seeing someone who cared about music. From “Love U” and “10 Hrs” to newer tracks like “Dope”, NanaBcool is 100% invested in himself. I know, nowadays, that when you say someone is “invested” in themselves it could seem like arrogance, but everyone should invest in themselves. YOU HAVE TO in order to survive life/ music business. Yet, as seen with NanaBcool, investing in yourself can be an act of humility when you realize that being apart of music may not make you The God of Music, but it certainly can help you know he is real. Such a thought could be why NanaBCool is simultaneously refreshing and classic in sound. You could put him in classic Hip Hop/R&B or b-line him to the future; either way he will sound like he belongs to Music. (SHOUTOUT to Producer Simon Sez for his delicious dance beats!)
