Album Review: Odesza Bring EDM Meditation In A Moment Apart
Odesza can be officially coined as the leaders of “Chill Trap”. While when you think of trap beats as booming bats of sound competing with each other for how deep a swing they can take to a bassline; Odesza see trap as a gape. In it, Millennial ears and hearts can fall endlessly into relaxed trances that redefines the stereo-typical images/ tools for mindfulness. Odesza’s newest album, A MOMENT APART, is like EDM for Meditation.

When you think of meditating, you probably think of silence or maybe a chime of bells ringing in sweet higher tones. For that, Odesza recruits Naomi Wlld, Leon Bridges, and Regina Spektor align over synth-waves to become my happy alternative to the usual, recorded ocean waves and gusts of winds used to bringing people back to their center.”Higher Ground”, “Meridian”, and “Show Me” combine the bombastic nature of EDM with the cool, crispness of a yoga soundtrack. I know that may sound humorous, but the result is a record that leaves you torn between dancing like mad-person and then going into a yoga position. Again, a “humorous” comparison, but a lovely effect. That in-between of exhilaration and and excitability is what makes A Moment Apart stand out amongst the rapid surge of EDM artists that can, at times, confuse noise with nuisance. EDM is not just about splitting heads in half with blasting arrangements, and Odesza show it is more meticulous than that. Each rhythm has a purpose/ emotional impetus, and, in that sense, you really grasp that A Moment Apart is kind of a concept record. From “Boy” to “Across The Room” and “Divide”, these songs are about falling in and out and right back in to love, but widens that concept by making love more than personal; it is cosmic.
