Concert Review: The Paranoyds Are Sweetly Anarchic At Baby’s All Right

Sometimes, you really have to bash your head into the air so you don’t bash it on a wall. The Paranoyds lived in that head-banging truth at Baby’s All Right, and the crowd was there because of it. As gentle mosh began and coy smiles gleefully entered the forming, push gala, I watched on as The Paranoyds played their audience as much as their instruments.

To The Paranoyds, a crowd is not solely a listening audience as much as group of people equally frustrated with life and living like a “Courtney;” the latter being my fave track and confrontation of consumer thoughtlessness. The crazy thing about this world is that there is SO MUCH happening, especially when it comes to murky ethics. Nowadays, you march for immigrant rights and immigration reform, but then go to pick up your Amazon package, which stands against such things. It is like we can’t seem to find a space for moral highness and our sense of right, which makes people, literally, paranoid, but makes The Paranoyds a formidably, nuanced group.
The Paranoyds – Face First (Official Video)

With their 60’s dreamy, punk vibe and their attention to detail on the haziness of being “woke” in a world with enough causes to put you in a coma, The Paranoyds felt extremely refreshing in a sound world filled with bands trying to seem distinct. Led by Staz and Lexi on vocals, the two gals TOTALLY gave off the “let’s smoke underneath the bleachers/ while we make out with a greaser” vibe. They felt classically rebellious while feeling new. With David on drums and and Laila on keys, their sound had the saccharine melodies of “I Want Candy” shredded and ripped like a Dylan’s Candy Shop got ransacked. Not to many people can make a sweet beat feel anarchic or yell to the mic come off as welcoming. Sweetly Anarchic! Yup, that is a perfect way to describe The Paranoyds.
