Artist Close-UP: Pom Pom Squad Are Coming To Rough Trade

We have heard of the legendary “riot girl.” The young woman with a middle finger up to society, her parents on call waiting, and a bucket list of dreams and self- identities she is eagerly defining. She is a badass, and Pom Pom Squad, interestingly, transform her into a woman of quiet revolutions. In their debut EP, Ow, they internalize grunge to match the current wave of mindfulness permeating through society.

Dream Grunge shall we call it? How about Shy Punk? Well, to be frank, there is nothing shy about lead singer Mia Berrin. If anything there is something smart and calculated to her voice and presentation. She feels like the punk version of Rosalia or Girl Ultra. Women that plan their images with their vocals; emoting an energy that makes them sound like a STAR! It as if they understand Hollywood is a place built on energy: not movies. If you believe in La La Land, then, somehow, you will end up playing jazz with Ryan Gosling. For Berrin. the jazz comes in the sentiment.

Vulnerability seems to be “the word” everyone is using to describe their music. I can’t say that music is more vulnerable than ever, but I can say that more people are feeling vulnerable and willing to say it. Everyday the world feels a little less safe, which only amplifies that fact that you might not feel comfortable in your skin. With a record that is LITERALLY called OW, Pom Pom squad run onto the the field and cheer up how they feel cheered down. Heavy Heavy [Official Music Video]

Melodically, Pom Pom Squad feel like a Nirvana/ Radiohead  dream slowed in motion. There you are with Kurt Cobain jumping through heart-shaped boxes when Them Yorke barges in with the Karma Police. You may think that sounds like a crazy, beautiful, random fantasy, which describes Pom Pom Squad perfectly. For More Information On Pom Pom Squad Click Here.
