Concert Review: Tall Juan Is The Argentinian Elvis At Baby’s All Right
An Elvis impersonating Argentinian who moves around the stage and approaches his guitar like a sumo wrestler would his opponent. Who is this? Why it is Tall Juan! Yes, he is tall, and, yes, he is Juan. He is also ABSOLUTELY INSANE and warm as a personality, which makes you readily accept his invitation to join in on his narrative madness or, at least, I did at Baby’s All Right.
Tall Juan feels like a troubadour released from a mental institute, and I say that 100% in compliment. You feel like he left the meds and picked up the guitar to piece together his mind and motives. It is for this reason that the songs from his debut album, Olden Goldies, come off both intimate and illusive. It is like Tall Juan is David from Legion (please watch this show) and amongst all the voices and personalities within him, he chose the persona of Tall Juan to deal with some very serious lyrical issues. Amongst the sifted madness of his nearly inflammable energy, I think he sweats gasoline from how fiery he is, are words that are deeply pertinent to today’s world. Drug addiction, heartbreak, and immigration are amongst the subjects Tall Juan brazes and blazes through with a freneticism that quietly breaks into raw pain. There are moments in his performance where he goes from the highest of highs to the lowest of emotional lows like, a comedy that became a drama. Such a capacity to turn, lift, crash, and revive the atmosphere of a room is one-of-a-kind, and is what makes him so rock n’ roll. It was as if he was a painter, and we were the subjects he had chosen to base his newest masterpiece. As he entertained he also analyzed, which brought the best of both worlds for me: wisdom and music. Moreover, being inspired by Elvis, makes Tall Juan bring back the vocal plays of this beloved legend.
From the random coo to the sporadic woo, Tall Juan treats his voice like a burning flame. Like Elvis, it can just flare up for no reason beyond the fact that Tall Juan FELT the moment. That spontaneity when combined by the sweetness of his voice and aura made him magnetizing. It was as if his voice was a honey-comb ready to lace his musical realties, no matter how harsh, with some natural sugar. Honestly, I am happy I saw Tall Juan now when he is brimming with the shiny glow and friendly gleam of a new artist. There is something special about seeing someone special before so many pick up on his light. Tall Juan will certainly rise to gain more fans, which is why his night at Baby’s All Right felt like a pre-emptive privilege; before his popularity super soars.
