Concert Review: Teen Experiment With Pop At Elsewhere
Watching Teen is exciting because they understand that details solidify the connection between an artist and a crowd. No audience is too small or venue to inconsequential to building your following. I say this because I have seen Teen a few times, and they always give a show that is planned to impress. At Elsewhere, once again, they were successful.
From skillfully plotting choreography to elaborate a lyric or using movement to further their melodies’ hypnosis, Teen treats their performance like a statement, particularly, on female empowerment. As the sisters, Teeny and Lizzie Lieberson, lifted a red drape and bound themselves to each other while wailing guttural notes, I thought I was watching experimental theater. Every time they have this moment, it shines as one of womanhood in sound. Lizzie’s voice is light and flowed; approaching notes like soaring paper planes. Meanwhile, Teeny’s voice feels like a game, of which she buttons her notes to produce either high kicks or magical spells.
While Lizzie has her moments of ethereal harmonies and soothing approaches to the limelight, Teeny’s voice and presence is bold, feral, and magnetic. They both represent the contrast of feminine nature in being nurturing and not one to mess with. Such dichotomies play into songs such as, “Putney,” “Runner,” “Pretend,” and “Free Time;” each promoting a level of deranged fun and solid defense. For Teen, you have to know how to laugh and know how to fight against those that want to take your smile. This is a dynamic women definitely understand, which is why their pop feels zany and zested with vibrance. Somehow, we must overcome the deluded to achieve what we dream.
Teen really does live up to it name of providing vibrant, emotional, and hopeful music. This era in our life is like someone lit a million matches in our brain, but what makes Teen so fun is that they show getting older does not mean the matches go out. Their music embraces the twenty-something year old woman figuring out how to turn the matches in her mind into a real bonfire amongst men. For More Information On Teen Click Here.
