Concert Review: The Blue Stones Are TURNED At Rough Trade
The thing about The Blue Stones’ concert is that this duo feel like they are rock n’ roll, and I am not saying that simply in sound. Their energy is of a group of guys walking into a room thinking they are rock-stars, and respecting the weight of that term. Rock Stars are not just the guys that wear multiple chains, tight jeans, fur coats, big hair, and do kissy lips as they yell against “the establishment.” They are also the guys that bring us that very notion: the idea that there are standards in life and love that are not just meant to be broken but are on a timer about to break. Blue Stones, at Rough Trade, broke them.

In some ways, The Blue Stones concert felt like a revival of rock to me. Tarek Jafar and Justin Tessier bash through their songs like The Hulk through a wall. They just breathe in a chaotic, fiery energy with a succinct precision like, a pair of men that really believe they can control wild-fire with just the sweat of their brow. Songs like, “Grim,” “Magic,” and “Black Holes” nearly cracked the floor as if lava was piping beneath us. Their energy was off the charts with focus and passion; treating every song from “The Drop” and “Oceans” like they were new anthems for a crowd that was sold out, despite it being awhile since they had a new rock record. Their was a genuine joy and earthiness to their sound and style, and the irony is that Tarek joked of how stations called them pop because of that.

Their pigeon-holing as “pop-rockers” whose sound felt too sweet to strike a rebel chord only made them revolt, which is why their upcoming album, COMING SOON!, is probably going to sound like a riot. You could tell as Tarek laughed that it bothered him, not because he doesn’t like Justin Timberlake, but because nobody wants to called what they are not and THAT IS THE ESSENCE OF ROCK N’ ROLL, PEOPLE! It is rebelling against any establishment or title over you that you do not support nor feel measures to who you are. Thus, Tarek roared his voice like a lion while Justin tore his drums like it was his prey; to make sure anyone who had doubts understood they were rock.
