Concert Review: The Crowd Gets Found With Bermuda Triangle At MHOW
Never in the history of my life have I seen three more beautiful voices unite to create a Bermuda Triangle. When we think of this legendary location, we think of all the people that mysteriously vanished. In some ways, it is a befitting name for the trio of Brittany Howard, Becca Mancari and Jesse Lafser as their songs testify to the many people that come into our life, give us a batch of impactful memories, and then disappear because they were only meant to be with us for a time.
It always amazes how certain people I thought, at one point, I could never live without are now gone: off to new lives I can only witness through Facebook Timelines. At Music Hall of Williamsburg, Bermuda Triangle captured relationships “come and go” nature so beautifully that even I cried: along with a few others. Yet, these ladies know they have that effect because Lafser even asks, “Are you ready to get sadder?” Going to see Bermuda Triangle is the equivalent to purposefully watching a good, sad movie because you need a good cry. Sometimes, we need or feel we need to shed some tears, and when it comes to singing on heartbreak, despite their witty jokes, these three ladies can pull rivers from your eyes.
First, you have Brittany Howard’s voice which rings your emotions like bells. Tussling between a cello and guitar, you are confounded by the way she hits notes so precisely and rawly, while her mouth moves as if the peel the skins of lyrics from “Suzanne” and “Till The End of Days.” Meanwhile, Jesse Lafser’s voice is so simply gorgeous; she hits notes like a finger flicking on the switch for light. Once again, you feel befuddled that a voice can be so straight and smoked in tone, but so rich and textured in its effects. Then, you have Becca Mancari whose voice feels like a harmonious bridge between both; fulfilling any vocal gaps between Howard’s rawness and Lafser’s simplicity. She is, sincerely, one of the best harmonizers I have heard: giving her vocal power as a launchpad to prove this Bermuda Triangle soars. Together, these women form the modern take on a heavenly greek chorus. For More Information Bermuda Triangle Click Here.
