Concert Review: The Hollow Cove Build Simplicity At Rockwood NYC
On the cusp of their debut, Hollow Coves played an intimate show at Rockwood Music Hall. Hailing their inspirations and talking about their traveling adventures in Australia, the duo sparked in me that new artists are not, necessarily, about giving you new “soundscapes” as much as giving you new stories.
Everyone is comparable to everyone, and the Hollow Coves, definitely, showed their influences in their lovely rendition of Angus and Julia Stone’s “Mango Street”. Yet, it was their capacity to be aligned with other indie, acoustic duos like, The Pines, but still seem fresh in presence, story, and effect that empowered them. In a world constantly seeking new, the Hollow Coves show newness comes from our openness to be yourself. These two guys were humorous, friendly, but, most importantly, open about their fears.
“Home”, “Adrift”, and “Runaway” were just a few of their songs that used the environment to reflect on their desire to everywhere and nowhere, all at once. It is a strange, emotional line we have all felt, the dream of being everyone and no one, but, maybe, it is because to be everything is to be nothing. There is a reason “God” calls himself “I Am”; when you are so simple, you allow yourself to become unlimited. Thus, I felt enraptured as the duo used every natural reference, from sand to stars or from sky to ground, to describe what it is to feel most moved when you are not moving.
When it comes to singing, Ryan does most of the the leading. Holding his guitar and with a“jughead” beanie, he oddly amplified Hollow Coves message of simplicity is complexity; the stiller you are, the more you reach. His voice feels like warms blanket being piled on top of each other, but are heated by his harmonies with fellow “Hollow Cove”, Matt. The loveliness of their harmonies is that they are not overpowering; these are two soft voices uniting to create a sheeted, comfy soundscape. The ease of their guitar-led set felt welcoming for a nice, Wednesday night, and serenading to those seeking a life adventure more than a romantic one.
