Concert Review: Ciaran Lavery Releases Your Darkness At Rockwood

Its hard to describe Ciaran Lavery’s music. Someone tried to say it gave them “heart pressure”; as if someone was pressing on their heart to release all the emotions it keeps in throughout the day. It was a solid analysis because Lavery’s music is the key to your spirit’s “pandora’s box”; readying to unlock every dark energy you carry to give that burden back to the same world that gave it you.

As fans aligned for the Spotify Fans’ First event, people were very giddy to hear and see a man that makes you cry with sentiment. Yet, from Phoebe Bridgers to Conor Oberst, artists now is the time to let it all out. We are in an emotionally purging era, for better or worst, and Ciaran is a perfect artist to rise in such a time. From “Lovers Who Make Love’” to “Return To Form”, even Ciaran, laughingly and sarcastically, acknowledged his show was for “high energy” and “positive vibes”. His wry, dry humor gave tiny breathers to songs that confronted the sadness of investing in things that simply do not pan out.

We all have given in to dreams, relationships, and situations that we thought would last forever or, at least, end happily. Yet, they did not, and trying to sift through the ashes of something that once enlightened you but now burns you with its memory is the epicenter of Ciaran’s music. Tracks like, “To Chicago”, “13”, and “Let Bad In” pinned with melodies that pierced or felt like acupuncture to your soul. Ciaran’s ability to needle through your feelings, to either feed or relieve, falls on his indescribably, good voice. He vapes and growls his vocals like a wolf howling at the moon hoping if he howls enough or louder, it will finally come down to greet him. It is symbolic image for a universal truth: we give our best to others in hopes they will do the same….. but then they do not.

Admittedly, I am taken aback by Spotify’s choice of Ciaran Lavery but also super impressed. He is a mature, sentimental artist quick with a quip and a lyrical quarry. When you think of Spotify, as an entity, you might think “party” or “loud”, but Ciaran is for the “quiet nighters”, who are stepping aside from the world to take in what that means: “the world”. He is for the person who is lugging a “pandora’s box” in their heart and is ready to ship it away through some good music. For More Information on Ciaran Lavery Click Here.
