Concert Review: The Stolen Make Me Feel Young At Highline Ballroom

Playing Highline Ballroom, The Stolen felt like a cross between The Vamps and Muse. They bring an electric melodrama to life through songs that sing to the most difficult, easiest time you will ever have in your existence: your youth. Thus, turning their audience into a Millennial Breakfast Club, I smiled in remembrance to the innocence of feeling and the sadness of letting that go.

Ahhhhhhh! Those were the days! When finishing your paper was the only pressure you had, and getting a new haircut felt like a literal revamping of your social status. Your youth feels like a strange time in your life because it scopes from absolute naivety to to breaking of it through the “real world.” Perhaps, that is why The Stolen names their band as such; they sing to the melodramatic marvel it is to have your only issue be how you feel. Thus, from “Rooftop” to “Oveboard” every track brimmed with the sifting naivety of having so many emotions pulsing through your heart for that one person, one choice, or one dream.

The Stolen’s show reigned with a particular, youthful glee that had the New Jersey band’s fans singing along through their set. These guys are sweethearts; even wishing their touring brother, Jake Miller, a happy birthday. That sweetness infused into their lyrics about feeling the bigness of “the now;” when problems are small, resolutions are more, and you are in LOVE with all that is present, especially your crush. It is for this reason lead singer Dominick Cuce has a swoon-worthy quality to it and gives their sound an “emo” edge. He brings out the raw hope and dreaminess of loving someone from a distance or wanting a dream from afar, which is perhaps why I found their style so youthful. There is nothing younger than dreaming.

From “West Coast” to “Euphoric,” The Stolen showed they are a show/ band that you can easily fit into your week/ playlist. Their set was like a breathe of fresh air, in part, because of my mentioned hopefulness. We knock hope down or try to coil away from dreaming of a crush, but there is something so fulfilling about thinking things can work out for you, and The Stolen’s alt-rock-pop makes you believe they can.
