Concert Review: The Unlikely Candidates Get Your Vote At Mercury Lounge

When it comes to bands, the frontman, inevitably, becomes the star. Maybe, because, basically, he is the singer. You hear his voice resonate over your head, which is why, live, you gravitate towards him; you want to see how they enact their voice through their physicality. For The Unlikely Candidates, Kyle Morris goes above and beyond to prove this point.

Kyle Morris is a balance beam between silly and serious. Not many can say “I want to do a sexy eulogy to Prince” without coming off totally creepy. Yet, there is this “goof-ball, party guy” under-current to Kyle’s style that further distinguishes their sound from being “another pop jam”. Yes, they serve catchy tunes, but they also serve the personality that makes them infectious.
The Unlikely Candidates – Oh My Dear Lord

We all have seen artists that have great songs compared to not being the greatest performers or the liveliest personalities. After all, a creative mind is not a guarantee or, necessarily, sign of a lively heart or person, and there is nothing wrong with that. Introverts can provide the most vibrant works, but Kyle Moore is no introvert. He bops around the stage as if his legs were actual pogo sticks, and says things like, “Are you f**king ready?” as if Mercury Lounge was also the set of Space Jam. Yet, you eat it up because we all wish were “that guy”; the one who does not simply attend parties but has the gravitas to become it.
The Unlikely Candidates – World In My Pocket (Lyric)

Add on the Moore has a voice like he’s Father John Misty and Caleb Followill’s younger brother. He has that inherent rasp that gives some grits electro songs like, “Oh My Dear Lord”, “Celebrate”, and “Danger To Myself”. While these tracks, especially live, sounds like fun-houses made of rhythms they play into Unlikely Candidates’ personas of fun guys pushing boundaries. As crazy as it is, some nights we want takes risks, be new, and be bold. The Unlikely Candidates are for that night. For more Information On The Unlikely Candidates Click Here.
