Concert Review: The Weather Station Love For Power At Mercury Lounge
The Weather Station drizzled over Mercury Lounge with their cool, collected, and calm songs about being in your head. Led by Tamara Lindeman, the crowd, filled with various ages, swayed to songs that felt ready-made for those that struggle to love when they are struggling for power.
“You want to soothe me….but I want power”; this lyric leaped at me as if a spiritual frog had landed on my ponded mind. It felt like a key had been handed to me by Lindeman’s stroking voice, which pets your ears like an owner does their furry friend. Of course, most of us are not furry, but that type of loving command taught me something new about why love can be so hard. We all want power, and when we feel we are un-powerful in our life, either in career, esteem, or economy, it is hard to accept the love we are receiving. Moreover, it is hard to be clear enough to give it back.

From “Thirty” to “Impossible”, Lindeman’s voice fluttered as she appeared like the Cate Blanchett of indie music. It could have been the long blond hair, her meek but dry humor, or her sung capacity to embody how much we think about being simple. It is the tragic irony of humanity that we can read millions of books and think billions of thoughts on how to come of looking and feeling okay in a situation: no matter how hard. Yet, the key to being simple is simply to be it, and that is what The Weather Station build in ambiance: simplicity. You go in, grab a beer, and listen to the most thoughtful song based on mosquitoes, or giggle and admire Lindeman’s pride at going from getting 18 dollars in a Rockwood bucket (22 in Canadian money) to now being a “semi-succesful” rock band (as she put it).

The Weather Station succeed as live musicians because they are an easy add to your night. They are musically uncomplicated despite singing to the complications we add to our life. We never stop wanting love and we never stop wanting power, but The Weather Station is about figuring out how love is power and power is love. For More Information on The Weather Station Click Here.
