Concert Review: Tokimonsta Is An EDM Captain At Summerstage
SUMMERSTAGE IS UNBEATABLE THIS SUMMER! Like BRIC! it has truly picked up that free and high quality can live in a wonderful, “for the people” space. Thus, FOR FREE an entire crowd of Millennials were able to dance and get lit like it was Electric Zoo, while also learning about some of the TOP Korean- American acts.
Before Tokimonsta took the stage, Dumbfoundead BLEW MY MIND!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Admittedly and shamefully, I had never heard of him.
Yet, I did not display my ignorance because the crowd WAS LIVING for him like he was a Hip Hop Prophet, and it was I that had chosen not to read the Bible. The air could have been made of fire with how Dumbfoundead, along with Year of The OX, gave people enough lyrical heat to have their hips shaking and quaking as if they were made of plate tectonics. Smiles were abound because, again, it is nice to have an amazing experience that is open to all, especially all of your generation.
People often ask how to bring about diversity, and Summerstage, oddly, shows you how. Its not just about creating a vast lineup, but also saying to everyone, “You are invited!” While Summerstage meticulously chooses an eclectic span of artists that are either quickly rising or dominating in their music scene, by making their events either free or affordable, they have given both musicians and music lovers an access to each other that they, otherwise, would have not had. Example A: Me discovering Dumbfoundead. Still, Tokimonsta was their to headline.
As a massive screen zoomed behind her, making it seem as if she had used the Millennium Falcon or U.S.S. Enterprise to get to warp through a colorful vortex, Tokimonsta’s music brought a Hip Hop theme to the EDM scene: the dance-off. As her baselines and synths kicked like a rhythmically formed step team, people broke off into tiny “versus”/ friendly dance competitions. Yet, she bounced to her own refreshing, reviving sound; completely owning that she was the Captain Kirk for the night. In some ways, her music reflected her and Summerstage: confident and relaxing enough to make you move more. Yet, more importantly, Summerstage gave New Yorkers the opportunity to explore and discover scenes they had never seen like, the EDM scene and Korean culture.
