Concert Review: Tone Stith Has SOBs Swooning
I always knew Tone Stith would be a star. I felt from the moment I met him at Brooklyn Steel, and saw him approach fans with a sweet eagerness that made him look like their fan. To be honest, when you are an “artist on the rise,” you “fan-out” over having fans. People are listening to you, which was the first part of your dream. At S.O.Bs, Tone Stith proved he was a worthy listen.
As the crowd brought up their phones and sang along as if Tone’s songs were the last love songs on earth, Tone totally hit one of my “keys to success,” which is, basically, reverse psychology. If you are a young man, in R&B, singing to love as if you are the one whose heart is more more broken by women than breaking of theirs…. Congratulations, you won! It works! From Bruno Mars to Giveon, and even Brent Faiyaz, something about a man singing to what it feels like to be a woman in love and loss, but from his perspective, feels oddly equalizing. Then, if he goes off to singing oaths about how one day he will find “the one” and elevate her into pure cherished queendom….. GIVE ME THE ALBUM,SIR!
Tone Stith owned his stage because he approached it like a soapbox for all the guys that ACTUALLY LOVE WOMEN! I am not talking about loving women for how they make you love yourself, but relishing the idea of being bound to someone’s humanity because they taught you such a thing could be good. Tone has a “tone” that makes love feel like The Lovers Tarot card being eternally pulled to prove that you are fated to be with someone. NOW THAT IS THE POWER OF R&B! Perhaps, Tone is joining the aforementioned stars of R&B to solidify that its new wave is more than the genre’s classic sensuality; it is bringing an element of spirituality, requiring listeners to aim for a soul connection as much as bodily one.
