Concert Review: Whethan Gives A Wild Wednesday At Brooklyn Steel
Playing an EDM concert on a Wednesday is, certainly, a unique experience. Wednesday is an “edgy” weekday as you are not, completely, coasted towards the weekend. You still have two more days of duties and boss’ demands. Yet, that did not stop hundreds of people from coasting into Whethan’s Brooklyn Steel gig.
19 YEARS OLD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Whethan is 19 years old, and rising as one of the biggest DJ’s of 2018. Such a rise is with good reason when you check the chopped fluidity of his set. Whethan can go from Carly Rae Jepsen styled Pop to Public Enemy Hip Hop, and make them seem like they flow into each other in life’s soundtrack. He swivels sound waves like a heist car running through landscapes to escape. Thus, as an EDM DJ, he treats his mix like an emotional seesaw. He wants to rise you into a surreal fantasy to then crash you into a baseline reality. This yo-yoing of his sonics is intoxicating because it makes you want to karate-chop air as if stole your breath.

Looking around, the audience treated Whethan’s show as if it was a hyper exclusive Coachella; only a few exclusives got “the invite.” Watching over the audience, it was crazy to see hi-fives, chugged beers, and women climb men’s shoulders to dance mid-air because, again, it was Wednesday. Yet, that is the magic of Whethan. He makes you feel like you are a high-schooler in a country where 18 is the legal, drinking age. He reverts you back to your raucous innocence, which is why his age could be brought up. There is a “joie de vivre” in how he mixes and mashes through songs; so much so that he bops and hovers over his mix-table as if to protect and invest in his literal key to prosperity.

With a triangle of screens surrounding him, I found Whethan’s choice to be veiled in images an intelligent one. It made his show stand out compared to DJs that stand center: relying solely on lasers. His music, instead, became a series of films that went from space to plant life, but always showed that Whethan’s ignites people to feel like something great is beginning.
