Concert Review: Wilsen Ruin Me At Rough Trade
Celebrating their new album, Ruiner, Wilsen totally exemplified why artists need concerts; to revive and elevate their music. I had heard the album before seeing Wilsen, but the concert made me listen and understand that this record was for the people searching for their one in the midst of this apocalyptic world. Yes, their record/ show was for the romance of finding someone to hold you as you feel the Titanic hit the iceberg. In a way, isn’t that why we want love? For the cuddles that come from feeling passionate for another and hugs we get when the world feels least passionate about us?

Sonically, the record felt like a desert rock expedition into my life choices, of which Wilsen feel like the mellow hosts I need when I make poorer ones (lol!). I can just picture lead singer, Tamsin Wilson, entering my mind saying, “You are about to make a right on heartbreak. Please turn left.” Yet, we all have people in our lives that either helps us through the ruins of broken promises and self-images or are the ones that give us them. The power of Wilson and Ruiner is it enveloped the concert space to feel like a balance between safe and stimulating like, there you could get real about love without crumbling or glorifying it. Sometimes, its good enough to be simple, and no one captures that quite like Wilson’s voice.

Vocally, people need two types of singers: the divas and the delicates. We need the Arianas and Mariahs to reveal to us the sheer human capacity to sing like angels, and we need the Joni Mitchells and Joan Baezes to sing like the angelic. Both give us a varying dynamic, and Wilson is of the latter. From “Feeling Fancy” to “Align,” Tamsin had this Courtney Barnett/ Sharon Van Etten swag of stylish simplicity; delivering notes with effortless feeling and becoming a poster child for young women coming of age. In presence and presentation, she reflected with the audience of how Ruiner was about realizing that you need to get bolder as you get older. Taking risks and learning lessons are a must because time becomes more precious. I felt that! For More Information On Wilsen Click Here.
